Dermal Fillers

What are Dermal Fillers?

Dermal fillers are injectable products which are used to help restore or create volume, or to fill in various lines around the face. They are injected under the skin using numerous techniques, dependant on the desired look, or the area to be treated, and aim to give a more youthful or enhanced look to the face. They are made of Hyaluronic acid (a naturally occurring sugar chain molecule)
which will attract and bind water in the skin.

What happens during treatment?

Dermal fillers generally take between 20 – 45 minutes to administer dependant on the areas to be treated. I will discuss with you your thoughts and assess your face to decide on the best treatment plan for you. I will then determine the injection site(s) to achieve the best results. Topical anaesthetic will be applied prior to treatment to reduce incidence of pain. I will then administer the filler through several injections. You can usually feel the initial injection but the procedure should not be too painful, as the fillers contain lidocaine. The areas will be massaged afterwards, and unless advised otherwise, you should not massage the areas yourself. You can return to day to day activities immediately.

Areas which can be treated include:

Dermal filler in the lips can be used to:

  • Create or enhance definition in the Cupid’s bow or lip boarders
  • Add hydration
  • Create volume
  • Reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles around the lips
  • Correct any asymmetry
  • Balance the side profile
  • Balance the upper and lower lip ratio

Both dermal filler, and anti wrinkle treatment can be of value to improve the appearance of “smokers lines”.
Often both approaches together can have the biggest impact.
These lines are created by repetitive movement of the lips, therefore reducing this movement, and adding strength and structure to the area will make a big improvement, and prevent the lines from becoming deeper.

Carefully and strategically placing filler in the mid face can have many benefits:

  1. It can improve the appearance of the undereye,
  2. Provide a “lifting” effect to the lower face,
  3. Reduce the appearance of the nasolabial folds,
  4. Add some flattering contour and structure to the cheeks and cheek bones.

This can be very subtle, but make a wonderful difference.

A hollowing or creasing under the eye, where it meets the top of the cheek can be softened with specialist dermal filler to the area. If you feel that your eyes look tired or dark due to hollowness, then this could be the treatment for you. Please see the Beautifeye treatment, and polynucleotides as a good alternative for general eye rejuvenation.

These are lines that appear around the corner of the mouth, and radiate towards the chin. A very common and natural sign of ageing, and often people dislike them, as they feel that it makes them look sad. Dermal filler can be used to support and revolumise the area.

The lines that run each side from the corners of the nose to the sides of the mouth.
There can be many reasons why these lines become more obvious, and they can be associated with an aged appearance.
Dermal filler can be placed directly in the area to soften them, or most commonly treatment of the cheeks is also required to address the cause of the fold, (volume loss in this area)

Treating the chin with dermal filler can have many benefits:

  • Tighten the appearance of the jawline
  • Improve the side profile if a weak chin is a concern
  • Subtly remodel the shape
  • Harmonise the ratio of the face
  • Smooth dimpling or mask a cleft chin

Dermal filler to this area can add structure and definition. It can be used to mask the formation of jowls,
Sharpen the side profile, Create a slimmer look to the face.

Dermal filler can be carefully placed into the nose to create a straighter nose, or an illusion of a smaller nose. It can equally also be used to build a small nose.

Through the ageing process the temple area can lose fat, leading to a “hollow” look in the absence of natural volume. Dermal fillers like hyaluronic acid can help fill in these hollows and restore volume to the temples and brow area
